Straight off please just let me say that I ADORE
Green Wing and I've done an absolutely massive pic/gifspam below, so if you're not up for discussing, skip right to that by scrolling past the text or clicking
here.
If you are up for discussing, consoling and possibly helping me understand what I currently don't about the series, please read on.
If you haven't seen Green Wing I don't recommend reading this post as it's very spoiler-y but I really recommend watching the show. You can read about it
here,
here, or comment and I'll tell you what I like about it etc. :)
I'd been meaning to watch Green Wing for a long time as so many people had said it was good and I love the cast and it just generally sounded like my cup of tea, so after watching Julian Rhind-Tutt's episode of Merlin, the Tony Blair thing with Stephen Mangan in, and feeling like watching some new (for me) comedy, I was inspired to at last look for it on 4oD and begin!
Although it took a while for me to get properly into and it wasn't all perfect, I laughed till I cried on several occasions and absolutely loved all the main characters, the editing, music.. very nearly everything was amazing.
However.
Not ALL was well.
(You can still
skip to happiness if you don't want to read negativeness - I'd understand as I often don't want my opinion tainted - the brilliance of the show definitely makes up for the problems I have with it but if you'd like to stay I'd appreciate your helping me understand as I maybe just don't "get" some of it.)
Firstly, although I really loved Caroline and Mac's banter, relationship, and really wanted them to get together, it seemed like they were a bit TOO perfect for each other which I found a bit off-putting as it felt like the show was forcing it, pointing, "hey look - they should be together, see?" and it was a bit TOO obvious and forced.
I think the show meant it to be a bit tongue-in-cheek with the obviousness and soapy feel but I think they still meant you to want them to be together and though I did feel that, I still felt iffy about it.
I really loved the few touching moments with some of the other characters in a kind of comedic but meaningful way which really worked, like Joanna being depressed about her age and Guy's repressed emotions etc. and that was brilliant. I think the first series did pretty well tonally, and it was just little things I didn't really see the point of/find funny etc. but then the second series I think went a bit weird.
The main thing I really didn't like was how the love triangle progressed, as the trio's dynamic then couldn't really work as it did; it kind of ruined the funny banter the three of them had and it became too serious and didn't fit. It's like they continued as normal despite all that was going on and I really don't understand how they thought it could still work in that situation. The love triangle in the first series was quite light-hearted, tongue-in-cheek with a few serious, sweet moments too, with Caroline being manipulated a bit but in a jokey way, however in series two not only did Mac treat her badly but the stuff with Guy too got really depressing and weird - and with them all continuing to be friends despite the genuine rivalry felt really odd. There were a few funny moments to come out of it but generally I really didn't like how any of it was handled at all.
And then there's Mac's impending death and the Joanna/Alan killing spree thing then suicide!?!! I felt it was all too dark and serious for the show. They could have made it work but they played it almost ALL comedically and it was just.. odd. The scene where Mac tells Guy that he's dying was well done.. bits and pieces were good, but in general I was so disappointed and depressed by the end. The ending was just so confusing and depressing and I still really can't understand it all. I kept thinking "are they just trolling the audience? is this all meant to be some kind of jokey soap drama surreal weird.... thing where we're just meant to be mocking and not caring about the characters?" To an extent I think the drama is meant to be a bit spoof-y etc. but we are made to care about everyone and what happens to them, even though the world is odd and surreal. It is rooted in reality and real characters you can relate to and get to know. So when they handle should-be serious matters like the deaths of Mac, Alan, Joanna - and to a lesser extent Angela - so flippantly, it's really quite jarring. I know I do get more emotionally-invested in things than most people, and I am a perfectionist, but when I feel things are ruined like this and could be made better I find it so upsetting.
I really don't understand what they were trying to do with the ending and that whole thing, the tone etc. so if you understand and wouldn't mind commenting saying why you liked or disliked the ending etc. I would really really appreciate it!
I started this post straight after finishing the last episode and after a browse of Google to see if anyone felt the same way as me, but I couldn't find much so I started writing this post but I got too tired to finish. (It's 8:20am right now and I haven't slept yet so please excuse my failure to sentence.)
When I came back to it and added more to the picspam etc. I realised more and more that though I'd really love to discuss it and get answers, the negatives in the show don't really matter as I still love so much of it.
So here now is the epic picspam! I hope you enjoy! I'm sorry if it's too much for your computer - mine is often too slow to load lots of pictures so let me know if you have trouble and I might be able to divide the post into two or something... are there any other alternatives? I'm not very good at technical things!
Anyway, hope it does load okay and you enjoy!
It's a bit of a weird format but it's kind of in order of what I love about the show :)
I got the pictures from various sources but mostly from the
Green Wing tag on Tumblr and
fygreenwing. Sorry I can't credit every source but I've been pretty delirious and Google took me so many places I couldn't keep up. Really appreciate all the people who made stuff though - really brilliant :)
I am 80% certain that smiley emoticons invariably dissipate all ill feeling in any situation and excuse any wrongdoing of any kind. Absolutely. - And clunkily-used long words? The people whose copyright I have infringed should really be thanking ME at this point!
Anyway.

"..Let me finish.."
This made me cry with laughter first time and remains hilarious:

Then how the FUCKING HELL could this be an emmental loop?!"

Those two photos aren't from GW but couldn't find a picture of her smiling and these were too pretty not to post.
The one below's from
this hilarious deleted scene/out-take. Perfection.

I have to be honest though. The love of Boyce and Statham is greater than that of any of the excellent trio.

They truly cared about each other." -

Then there's the tragic splendour of Alan and Joanna. Hilarious. They're so outrageously obscenely compellingly absolutely brilliant.

And... just many other things that are hilarious and wonderful
