I asked that question of my maths teacher once, about algebra, because I'd never seen my parents use it for their day to day lives (the sums my father had to do as part of his job in the Army obviously required a lot of it), and I was genuinely curious. She told me I'd end up using it all the time for things like bills and mortgages and whatnot and that's why the basics were so important to learn now. She lied. I even do a lot of maths every day in my job as a nurse and not a single sum uses the stuff I covered in high school.
