I had a dream the other night that the apocalypse had happened and I was barricaded in a high-rise with friends in a eerily desolate city. I hope this doesn't signal what life will be like with the new Canadian government. Let's all hope that I don't have prophetic dreams like Buffy.
Despite the incessant polls announcing the election results

Random question--have you just found LJ and if so, how did that happen?

Don't be appalled, I should know more about Canadian politics than I do, and I live here and briefly considered a Political Science major (before getting a degree in English Lit instead). Also, my current knowledge about American politics is gleaned from The Daily Show and friends.
Random question--have you just found LJ and if so, how did that happen?I joined LJ mid-way through last year but didn't have the internet at home until a few months ago. As a result I only had time to squeeze in posting occasionally at work, but not much else. A few of my RL friends are on LJ so they recommended it, and I knew that a lot of Buffy fanfic writers were on LJ. (I don't write fanfic - yet - but I love to read it ( ... )

Haha. Me too, pretty much. But then I'm extremely cynical about US network news and am not convinced that a parodic and openly partisan source is not just as viable as the "serious" and silently partisan news sources.
I ended up on LJ after already having been involved in Roswell online fandom. My two RL friends that write fic were both on LJ and finally convinced me to actually use the journal I'd set up and ignored. And then I came into the open with my Buffy fandom (I've always been a massive Buffy fan but wasn't previous involved in the fandom).
Hmmmm, how to "get out there more." See, I think that a lot of the connections that I have made were via my fanfic so someone who's an active reader might be a better person to ask. But I think that the best ways in general are to be active and comment/leave FB, etc. It kind of all starts to snowball, really.

I've always felt the same thing! It seems like calling a program "fake news" allows a show like the Daily Show to actually tackle sensitive issues that news networks are hesitant to report on. The comedy/parody aspect is able to balance out the political critique, making the reporting - mostly - non-threatening. I also love how Jon Stewart is able to be blunt about issues but not seem confrontational.

I have a similar experience. I wasn't involved in the online fandom when the show aired because of no home computer. Also, I fortunately have a lot of RL friends who are Buffy fans. We watched the show together and then would discuss/debate afterwards.
