I loved this ep! And actually, I didn't buy what Dean was saying about being happier at the end- well, not completely. I think he was putting on his patented Dean Brave Face and fooling himself

I think you've got a point about Dean wanting a mate to mess around with, someone to have a good laugh with. As much as he loves his little brother, it's all mixed up with a need to take responsibility for him. He didn't quibble when Sam decided to leave partly out of guilt because he feels he failed that responsibility, I suspect.
Go Sam for fighting against swallowing the demon blood!
"Two things I know: Bert and Ernie are gay and you're not dying a virgin on my watch." BWAHAHA!
Great, nuanced performance by Misha and, on a purely shallow note, Jared/Sam looked hot.
Yes, I thoroughly agree with both comments re Misha and Sam/Jared. I like Jared better with the hair pulled back like that.
As for a mate for Dean to mess around with - I think that's true, but I think on some level, Dean must want even more than that, and that's what Castiel is to him. I think Dean is *hurt*, and has been for a long time, by the subconscious knowledge that he has no friends. No one has chosen *him*. I think it's one of the many reasons why he is so full of self-doubt, and so deeply entrenched in his need for his family. Both Ellen and Bobby fulfil surrogate parent roles, but no one has been there as Dean's friend - except now.
Remember that discussion we've had about how annoyed we'd get with random ppl on the the side of the world who post spoilers without putting them behind protect of lj cut or something.....
same applies to all us in the antipodes who are currently d/ling!!!!
So how do I do a cut thing? And the spoilers are very very mild - you can't tell a thing about the plot from what I wrote! I just used the episode to develop a meta thought.
Yep, I'll be up. Working my way through S4 DVDs. Just rewatched 5.03 and there are a number of very cool things to chat about.
Hey! I just noticed that 'I will watch it and explain it' comment. I am now sending Epic Vibes of Evil into your cats' brains. Your clean laundry is in peril, woman!
Think back to the one with the siren when he was SO excited to bond with the Fed (err, Siren, but you know) and to talk about cars and music and go to strip clubs. He REALLY needs a pal, because in Sam he's still worried about him being his brother and his only family. And I'm talking any time in life, not just right now where he's worried about the demon blood and all that. He's just always had to look over his shoulder to watch out. John harped on him time and time again to watch Sammy, so it's his number one priority. Right now, he has new priorities. Like getting Cas laid and laughing and being super witty, and I LOVE this Dean. But I'm still sad about Sam and Dean being Sam over here and Dean waaaaaaaaaaay over there. :(
Yes, the Siren is another excellent example. And I think back to Skin Deep, when he's laying down the 'no friends allowed' mantra to Sam, and I think of the fact that John made friends - Caleb, Jim Murphy, Joshua, Bill and Ellen Harvelle, Bobby - but poor Dean never had the chance to because while John was off researching and hunting and bonding, *he* was left behind in a hotel room or a short term lease house looking after Sam, being the parent.
On reflection, this makes me madder about John than I've ever been before, and I'm used to being a bit of an apologist for the man. Just - grrr.
As for boys being apart - sigh. Yes, it's awful. And the way Dean looked over at the empty space in the car, and Sam almost rang him... But form a story point of view, I think it's an excellent move. Already we've seen character exploration in both that would have been unlikely if they were together. And I didn't want another season of them bitching at each other, though that, too, was the right narrative choice, given what was going on.
