Why do fools fall in love?

In which I ramble about Justified, Jensen and Jeremy, and what makes one character or actor work for you when another perfectly good one just doesn't.

Excellent question.

Jensen Ackles is NOT my type. My type is small, thin, slightly feminine looking and quirky. Jensen Ackles is none of these things. In face he is so far from them I shouldn't even have noticed him but notice him I did.

Noticed and couldn't pull my eyes away.

You know, you've almost described the bloke I do have some vague stirrings for - Jacob Pitts, who plays Tim Gutterson, in Justified. He's got this wonderfully dry, sarcastic humour and intelligence, does the competency thing. He's just not given enough screen time. But then, I have ordered S3 - maybe he gets more then.

So who else fits that bill for you?

I don't think I have a type - although over the years I've gone for very few blonds (which is probably one reason why I dislike it when someone describes Jensen as 'the blond'. The other is that it's dodgy writing). In fact, I've more often gone for quirky lookers myself. It's more that, objectively, I see Tim Olyphant's good points, just as I can, say, see Matt Bomer and think, ooh, pretty, without them rattling my cage in any way.

It's the stupid hat that puts me off Matt Bomer. I know it's a character thing, not him, but it's os stupid. But he does nothing for me because he's just too typically good looking. Elijah wood just after LotR was more my type. Different, interesting, not classically good looking.

I often find that to me a character becomes attractive as I get interested in their personality.

It's like... Jensen isn't that much more attractive than say Marc Blucas (the guy who played Riley on BtVS), yet I find Jensen hot as hell, whereas Blucas leaves me blah.

And even though I'm physically utterly unattracted to Jared, I do love his Sam and think he's a great actor.

Oh, yes, I remember Marc Blucas. I found his character pretty bland, so MB didn't have much to work with. And yes, if you were to compare all the good looking blokes on TV today, there'd be much of a muchness between them in terms of looks. Just even, classically regular features. And if you take some of the publicity shots for SPN, the scowling/thuggish ones, I don't find Jensen attractive at all.

What attracted me was the character - the spark, the expression. It's why I love screen captures of Jensen acting, but like very few of his publicity shots, because the moody/sexy pose does nothing for me, but a Dean full of emotion, those big eyes all wide with feeling? Ooh, yeah.

I think it's the same for me as it is for you - that moment of vulnerability. I dislike the 'Bourne' movies, but there's a moment in the newest one, when Mr. Renner's character is asking to stay on the 'Bourne' project (or whatever it's called)....and holy crap. If i hadn't already adored him from 'Avengers', i couldn't have resisted him after that.

For me, for Dean, it was him saying he couldn't do the job alone, and when Sam pointed out he could- he said he didn't want to. That exposed everything, in those few words. His need for family, his loneliness, everything.

I liked Mr. Olyphant so *very* much in 'Deadwood' - he was awesome there. Might give him a try in that.

Oh, god, yes, re Jeremy - "Is this a test? If I pass it, can I stay?" Apparently, that was the first scene of The Bourne Legacy they filmed, and the producers just got shivers when they saw it. Jeremy Renner slays me as an actor. If you haven't seen them, try Neo Ned (a truly surprisingly sweet film) and definitely MI: Ghost Protocol. But he's such a chameleon; utterly chilling in 'Dahmer' and 'The Town', so sweet in '12 and Holding'. And he can sing. Bloody hell. (And he campaigned for the Democrats, so...)

I didn't see much of Deadwood, but my brother got the series for Christmas, so I might have to steal it form him. The little I saw I found rather depressing; it didn't seem as if there were any decent characters in there. It seemed to have a completely cynical, amoral heart. Maybe I was just unlucky in the bits I saw, but there didn't seem to be anybody I could barrack for. I know TO plays Seth Bullock - is he a good guy?

YES. Omg. That scene made me want to cry. I watched the MI just for Mr. Renner - didn't care for Hurt Locker, despite him being in, it just was too depressingly awful for me.

I'll have to give a look at the others.

Deadwood is *very* amoral, but it also have absolutely wonderful, uplifting moments and characters you will fall in love with. TO character is a Sheriff, and he's come to Deadwood with his pal Sol Star to start a store - *not* to keep the peace. But things don't always go as planned.

There are moments where you want to weep for humanity, and then there are moments of pure delight. I absolutely grew to love both Seth and Sol, Alma and her adoptive daughter Sophia, Trixie, Calamity Jane.... Even Al Swearingen. And the doctor! And Mr. Wu!! Jim Beaver (Bobby Singer), has a wonderful role in it, as well. Do give it a chance.

Okay, good. I will definitely give it a go. I think I saw a couple of episodes - one had prostitutes being savagely murdered, the other had Al savagely murdering someone else, and it was all just so - gah. But I couldn't help admire its look and feel, and it was clearly a work of immense intelligence. And Calamity Jane was brilliant. So far removed from Doris Day! Utterly believable, tremendously sad. I guess each ep I saw the good guys lost horribly. And while I don't need rainbows and kittens, or inevitable good guy wins, it just seemed so bleak I thought no, I don't need this unrelenting gloom. But if you tell me there are good times too, I'll persevere (sooky la la that I am).

I hated it when Daniel left, though I loved the Jack!angst. Still...was relieved when Daniel came back!

Hey you! I've been following your hospital dramas, but I couldn't post a comment? There didn't seem to be any comment function on the posts. I am so glad your little bloke is home! And I wanted to share your concern at not being able to stay in hospital with him; I could see how torn you were. You can only ever make the best call as oyu see it for your family.

Yeah, sorry...turned off comments. Was too tired, nervous and twitchy to answer comments properly, so I just left them off. I felt the love *smiles*.

Yeah, totally hated that...but it was a good thing I didn't as traffic was stupid yesterday - and he slept until 11pm anyway. Then woke up and played until 1am (just like he had the last two times). So it would have been a wasted trip anyhow. Still...would have liked to have gone - but I was so exhausted (this last week catching up with me I suppose) that I was scared I would have gotten into an accident and gotten someone (including myself) hurt. Then we would have been carless on top of it all. Doesn't stop me from feeling any less guilty though.

Still...he was cheery this morning and came home happily with Mama. Pretty cheery most of the day, too, though it has been major work trying to keep him from bouncing off the walls! And with his brother home it is even more work, lol!

*Sigh*

I'm so glad it's all worked out, and I think you made absolutely the right call. In fact, I can only admire your clear-headedness in a deeply stressful time. You thought of not only your baby but the rest of your family *and* the rest of the public - because you're right, you sounded exhausted and stressed and not fit to drive.

Keep going with your gut, hon - it's a good one. And try to get some rest (yeah, I know, I know).

I can see your point in not connecting to Raylan in a sexualized way and why. I think I'm already there bc I've loved Timothy since Broken Hearts Club, wherein he was chock fulm of sass and cynicism with dashes of vulnerability and want. It carried over for me in Catch and Release. In that, it almost feels like a matured, assured version of his BHC character (granted, not straigh). And so to see him play someone more cocky and full of bravado? I'm so turned on it's not even funny (except it kinda is, given how many times I bite my fist in delight when he's wearing one of many fabulous Hensley).

Oh, well, I can see it. The man is just perfect in a henley. And the way he stands hipshod, in those boots, with those jeans - just that collected sense of himself... dayum. I find him wonderfully hot and attractive, but I'm just not in love.

Are those other things movies or series?

Oh yes, they're both movies. Broken Hearts Club was a more indie-ish film, so it might be harder to find. But Catch & Release has Jennifer Gardner and Kevin Smith, so it should be way more widespread.
