I understand a lot of these feelings all too well. I’m a very competitive person. Your feelings absolutely make sense to me, and I’ve heard a lot of the same - you still did so well though, why isn’t it enough? Because when you’re the close to winning and lose, you wonder if you’ll ever get your shot again.

WOW! This is a BRILLIANTLY written bit of gaming psychology and it's publishable. You KNOW your game and you KNOW your head and wow wow wow. Impressive. I'm sorry you didn't take first. I've been there and it sucks in such a unique way - I wish we had a word for that feeling.

There's so much for a nerd to love about this! This winning vs. losing being the stuck thing, though, that reminds of me of the U2 song Stuck In A Moment.
