I am an agnostic comfortable with Christian terminology, but the God of Trump supporters is so unlike the God I was raised with.

This.

Only, sadly not, since I left the Church. I could not reconcile the two views then and I cannot reconcile it now.

I'll admit that I haven't been as active in the church recently as I was in the past. I'm still torn as to whether this is a blessing or a curse.

I sometimes wonder whether we're reading the same Bible.

Spread your Gospel, forgiveness and kindness and teaching, and help those you can. I think that's all that's left for the US at the moment.

Whether we like it or not, many people are single-issue voters. For a lot of the religious right, that single-issue is abortion.

I had the recent misfortune to talk to a group of (quite terrible, frankly) women about why they voted for Trump. Their logic was simple: their God demands that we end abortion, and they see Trump as being the easiest way to do it.

Considering the current legislation being pushed (HR 7 comes to mind, immediately), I cannot say as I am surprised by this.

I'm torn on the abortion issue. There's definitely Scriptural backing for being against it, but it's sparse.

I just wish that some other term had been agreed on for the Christian view than "pro-life", because as many have pointed out, some other Republican views are anything but.

Perhaps they voted for Trump in spite of their religion, and not because of it, and whatever Trump said/did, their secular reasons for supporting Trump overrode their religious objections, plus there was the issue of abortion, which for many is the deciding one.

I can certainly understand the theory behind having a business leader running the largest corporate entity in the world (namely, the US Government). The trouble is, Trump's not a particularly good businessman. If Bill Gates or Warren Buffett were running? Sign me up.

And that right there is why I stopped going to church! Too much petty small mindedness disguised as faith.

Like Emily Dickinson, I keep the Sabbath at home.

I'm in between churches right now, but I don't want to throw the baby out with the bathwater. There's also plenty of good to be found in the church and its people; I do my best to ignore the pettiness, but I definitely recognize that it's there.
