I'm at my parents' house for a couple weeks - they hadn't seen my son since last September. Their house is packed full of junk accumulated over 35 years, so I've tried to cull some of the stuff I left here after college. While tidying my old room, I came across a paperback novel

People say my mother has a foreign accent, but it's imperceptible to me, except for words that come up maybe two or three times a month. On the other hand, I can hear her brother's accent in every sentence he utters, and he had the same primary and secondary schooling -- maybe college too, I'm not sure -- and has lived in the U.S. almost as long.

My parents are fairly well-spoken, and we moved around a fair bit following my dad's job when I was young, so I didn't have much of an accent as a kid. I've lived near where I do now for a long time, though, and it has a couple of distinctive accents, one rather lazy in terms of mouth movements. Alas, firenightingale and I both now exhibit signs of said lazy accent.
We're trying to curb that a bit so Junior doesn't end up with too strong a version himself. I suspect our efforts might be in vain, however!
