Thanks for reading! I liked sticking John in a different role, though I wasn't quite expecting this to be as dark as it was. Appreciate the kind comment! Good to hear from you! :)
Oh my...I can't get over how hard this was for John- trying to fix Tayven, given respite hope when the fever came down and then waking up to find him worse and declining. No wonder he despaired, Hesh and his goons already hurting him, what would they do now Tayven was dying? But not without a fight! You had me going there when Hesh had him and then the explosions happened and he went over the sill with nothing to climb down to. Thank goodness for Ronon! Wonderful whump- that knee must have been agony! and the Comfort from Carson was really well done too, had me teary eyed. How typical that John would lie there in pain, as penance for failing. In some way I do understand Hesh's violence as a product of the war but it still didn't make it right. A real keeper for the fanfic archives.
Thanks for reading and commenting! This turned out to be a lot darker and more serious than I originally thought it was going to be. I had this idea of putting John in Carson's shoes, but then as I got into, realized just how difficult that would be for some to deal with all the consequences.
I felt a little for Hesh. There's no way that what he was doing and how he was acting was right, but there was a small part of me that understood why he acted that way and where he was coming from. He was a little frightening to me in how extremely violent he turned out. Thanks for reading!
Thank you! It was cool to write John doing something completely different, and playing around with the consequences of that and how it would affect him.
Oh, how tragic! But there really was no other was for this heartbreaking situation to end.
This story was dark and wonderful at the same time. From Paulsen to Hesh and Tayven and all the other boys, the story was filled with intriguing and believable characters. Despite some of them being the villians, I couldn't help but feel for them, too - they were all casualties of war.
The ShepWhump was excellent and it really added to the sense that time was running out for everyone.
The ending was perfect. There is no easy fix for some battlefield situations. But Carson's support brought a spark of needed hope.
Thank you for reading and commenting! I really enjoyed setting up the world and the situation, then throwing Sheppard into a role that was out of his depths. It wasn't until I already had him in this situation that I realized, "Oh, this is not going to be a happy story at all."
Hesh was not a likeable character at all, but I still felt for him. He was very much a product of his circumstances, and might have turned out completely differently if he hadn't lost his parents and hadn't been forced into such a dire survival situation. He had his own scars to deal with, just like Sheppard.
I definitely can't write such dark stories all the time, but I did enjoy writing this one and exploring something a little different. Thanks for reading!
