The town probably took it, just like they take everything else. I haven't managed to find out where they keep everything yet. Or how they keep things that aren't tangible.

Well, if you're trying to travel without a ship there's a good chance of dying, especially if you're not a Time Lord. But the TARDIS protects everyone inside her from the time stream.
