My first attempt at canning

I love the bread and butter pickles at the farm stand, sadly they are 6.50 a pint jar! So I decided to try making my own. I canned for the very first time yesterday using this recipe ( Read more... )

lovely! once my husband and i are in a better place financially, i want to get a bunch of stuff and start caning. my grandma and mom had me help when i was a kid, and my grandma made the BEST bread and butter pickles! can't wait to do some myself!

I know what you mean about money. My husband is the only income right now and he is in the lovely sequestered part of the job world. I know he's lucky to have one but a pay cut at this point hurts ( ... )

You can often pick up job lots of jars at thrift stores and yard sales.

The pressure canner is a worthwhile investment. You can save all your vegetable peelings in the freezer then use them to make a huge batch of veggie stock for soups etc. Same with bones fom chickens. And home canned beans rapidly become ridiculously cheap :)

I had a pressure canner, huge thing. I would rather just freeze my broth, but if it appeals to someone else that's great. My only point was to show that starting canning might not be as expensive as people think, for general jams, jellies, pickles, and other acidic foods:_)
