I would say whatever you like. I used dark rum and I think that's what the original recipe calls for. But if the only thing I had in the house was white, I'd use that. I'm not sure about spiced. I haven't had spiced rum in a long time, it might be great, (it is spiced, and the butter mixture is also spiced) or it might be too much spice competing with each other.
