wow, I'm making this next time! Thank you so much for the idea:) Just saw that Yotam Ottolenghi has his open recipe for it http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2010/apr/16/yotam-ottolenghi-shakshuka-recipe

I think Spain also has a dish which is very very similar. My friend used to make it for dinner, but I'm not sure about its proper name (smth like huevos con tomate?)

I was just about to say that. This reminds me of a less-spicy version of Shakshuka.

Bet it's amazing on top of things as well: pasta, rice, bread, corn patties...

absolutely! I had it with focaccia and it was great, but never though about pasta... it must be very good

Yum and a very timely post, as I happen to be making a Moroccan version of this dish that has merguez sausage.

OK, so in addition to Italy, Spain and Israel there is a Moroccan version too! I never thought this dish is so international!

Yes! LOL I think most cultures have a version. The Israeli one might have come from North African Jews who brought it there from Tunisia (though all of the N. African and east Mediterranean countries have their own versions) and was probably originally spread throughout the Ottoman Empire. Turkey has a version too called Menemen. Americans also have a version (which might have come from Italy) called "eggs in purgatory".
