Cherry Plum recipes, Hit me!

Preserves, jams, (I was thinking of trying a clafoutis with it).

Gluten free/Celiac friendly would be most appreciated.

(We have a cherry plum tree in the backyard and this year its got a crazy huge crop this year and I actually want to do something with it this year.)

As a "guy", I started helping my mom do home canning, when I was 13. I learned to make pickles, and to can tomatoes, and to make garden ends...

But some years ago, (in my 50s), I was "gifted" by a co-worker with oodles of plums. I tried making Jam, but ended up with more of a jelly instead. Not enough pectin.

I moped. One day "me ol' Da" sat down with a bowl of ice cream and poured the plum stuff on top! (We had to hide some of the jars because he was running his sugar numbers up. Diabetic. He was putting it on a lot of things that you wouldn't normally think of, but "sweets is sweets", as he used to say...)

So, if you make it just so, on the "sweet" side, and not too stiff, you can use it for toppings. :o)

That sounds like a fantastic idea! If I make it like that I could probably put it in my plain yogurt, too!

If you want to make jam with plums, then do NOT believe any jam recipe that says "Skim off the plum stones as they rise to the top"

They don't.

And you spend hours fishing for them, while the jam bubbles away getting thicker and thicker!

BUT, if you think to yourself, "Sod it! I'm not doing anything with these plums right now, so I'll just stuff them in the freezer" then you are on to a winner.

Wash your plums, count them into a bag and weigh them. Write on the bag the number of plums, plus the weight, then freeze.

When you want to make jam with them, plomk the bag in a big mixing bowl and let it defrost. Then stick your hands in and mush the plums, picking the stones out - counting them out! - and flinging the plum bit into the pan next to you.

It is messy, but quick, and works a treat.

It is true that there is little pectin in plums, but there is plenty in plum stones - you can bag up a handful in some muslin and drop it in your jam pan if you want to.

Sounds like a great idea! But..I do actually have a plum pitter that I was planning on using as I don't believe anything that says leave the stones in:)

But I think your method is better! THX!
