Interesting. My grandma in Odessa often made a vegetable dish similar to ratatouille - which was always called "sauce". I was convinced that it was just some sort of very odd family naming convention. I'm glad to know it's regional and not just our own craziness!

Our recipe is somewhat different from this one - in fact it's almost a classic ratatouille. No potatoes. Peppers, onions, carrots, garlic, tomatoes, squash and/or eggplant, greens. Vegetables sauteed separately, then stewed a bit together. It was so delicious with some crusty bread... I think I'm going to make some as soon as the heat wave is down! Thanks for the idea!
