I've never made, let alone tasted a carrot cake. The concept seems so strange to me ... a cake with grated carrots inside. However, you're so enthusiastic about this cake that I think I should give it a try.

Perhaps, I'll go to a very good bakery and buy a single slice to taste before I make the effort to bake one myself though. :) I'm bookmarking this recipe until then. I'm glad that you didn't go overboard on the decorations.

It actually tastes more like a spice cake. No strong carroty flavor to it. As I said below, I hate the frosting that it usually comes with. The cake itself is quite tasty

That's true, it doesn't really taste like carrot, but more like a spice cake (a very special one).
I think it is really worth trying and going to a good bakery sounds like the best option.

I also prefer the frosting to be less sweet and less rich than the classic American variation. It should taste mainly of cream cheese with a bit of sweetness and a tiny bit of saltiness (like e.g. in this recipe), then it brings the cake to a completely different level.

Hope you will enjoy it! :)

I don't like most American carrot cake, but not because of the cake itself. I hate the thick, icky-sweet cream cheese frosting that gets slathered onto it. Ruins an otherwise perfectly nice cake, as far as I am concerned.

Is this frosting really sweet? I'd almost prefer just a light glaze to a full-on frosting.

I see, I also prefer the frosting very mild. This one is less sweet than normal American frosting. It tastes mostly of cream cheese with light sweetness and salty hint. To me it perfectly complements the cake.

Hmmm...that sounds quite nice. I may give that a try. Most carrot cake frostings I end up scraping off.
