Crock pot issue

Jan 27, 2011 09:52

I was recently reminded that in its time with us, our 5-qt Crockpot, marked for two heat levels, "Lo," and "Hi," but the heat levels are incorrectly labelled; they should instead read "Boiling Hothot" and "Sunside Surface of Mercury." Nothing is wrong with our electricity and anyway, we've used it in three different places with moderately old, ( Read more... )

Sounds like it's time to get a new one- perhaps re-purpose the old one as a deep-fryer! lol

We've had a few crockpots over the the past 5 years of marriage and they have all cooked HOT. I've read that the newer ones cook hotter now b/c of food safety concerns. All I know is my "low" boils food, which is much hotter than it's supposed to be.

This. if you google "crockpot temperature too hot" you'll find tons of bloggers, articles, etc all talking about this.

I don't think, unfortunately, that it's "broken" so much as there's a food safety concern that the manufacturers tried to address.

My Mom's old Crock pot was the same way whereas our newer one takes forever to heat up on Lo and Hi. Sadly, we never fixed the problem and donated it to Goodwill. :/ Hopefully someone can handle its heat and is enjoying it. Good luck with yours!

I'm in the same boat, and it is frustrating because I like to put it on while I'm at work and not have to worry about it for the 8-9 hours I'm out (isn't that what crockpots are for?) I'd also love to do some of the things that my parents can do with their crock, like cook a whole chicken with delicious results. Sadly, the heat of my crockpot has ruined a few recipes I've tried, and the only thing I've been able to do is just to move on and stick with the recipes that have yielded good results. Pulled pork always turns out great and soups are usually good. Chicken breast cutlets do okay if they have enough sauce/liquid, but they tend to be somewhat dry. On the other hand, I made a "honey mustard chicken" recipe with thighs and legs and sweet potatoes that turned out pretty gross. The meat was salvageable, but the sweet potatoes turned into an oily mush. If I ever get up the nerve to try it again, I might put the sweet potatoes in later on in the cooking process.
