Egg Whites in the refrigerator

Dec 08, 2010 08:26

So, I've had a bowl of egg whites sitting in my fridge for a week (12 whites, to be exact). I meant to make meringues, but then I got sick and never got around to it. Are they still safe to use? If so, is it likely they'll whip up nicely, or should I just toss them?
I just don't want to risk it if they're not safe, or waste them if they are.

help: is it edible

There are so many variables here....mainly were they stored in an air tight container in a very cold refrigerator? If so, they are more than likely OK to use, and should whip up fine at room temperature. That being said, I don't think I would use them for meringue. Maybe angel food cake, or something that will be brought up to a good temp.

If the eggs were old to begin with, and/or weren't stored properly, I would toss.

Not sure if the container was air tight, but definitely in a very cold refrigerator. Thanks!
