HP Sauce ideas?

Well I was pretty excited to find the famed brown sauce/HP Sauce at Husky Deli in West Seattle (a random series of coincidences led me to it), since I've been hearing so much about it on this comm and others.

Edit: I should specify that I'm excited about finding the imported version, as apparently the American version of HP Sauce can be found ( Read more... )

Not exactly a recipe - but I like HP sauce on bacon and egg rolls. Or homemade chips as a dipping sauce!

Oooh I will definitely try using it on chips/fries.

If you google hp sauce recipe, you'll get a lot of them. The Jaime Oliver forum link alone has a whole bunch.

i was under the impression that you could find that in places like walmart now. if not, whole foods and world market should have it. if it's actually that hard to find, then you can order a variety of flavors from this website if you're american. normally the hp stuff found in america is actually made in america, but the hp sauce the store gets (should be) directly from england. i'll crack heads if it's not. at least the cadbury at the store is actually from england and not the crappy hershey kind.

anyway, i can vouch for the curiosity shop. i think a year working there is enough, don't you think?

Seriously, re: available at Walmart? I've heard that it's really hard to find in the U.S. Certainly I've never been able to find it in a regular grocery store, much less somewhere like Walmart that carries very few specialty items. But maybe others have had more luck than me. I've never checked Whole Foods or somewhere like Cost Plus, maybe it is available at those places. But it was "only" $3.85 at Husky Deli, whereas this place that specializes in British imports near me wanted nearly $7 for a bottle ( ... )

first, i'm aware it's made in the netherlands, but i'm not getting into all this business crap. it's still british hp sauce. the american stuff isn't made in netherlands. i think it's made in canada? or somewhere in america. i can't even remember what the bottle said.

second, hp sauce (the american version, at least) has been added to international food sections at publix, bi-lo, ingles, walmart, etc from what i've seen. i can't remember which ones, specifically, but i do remember seeing them in normal supermarkets. but, again, it's the american crap.

third, a bunch of different elements influence pricing. for example, one time we got in wine gums and sold them for $3. the next shipment we got, we had to sell them for around $5. different times of years, different order sizes, different distributors, expiration date, import/export rates, added taxes/tariffs/whatevers, etc etc. it's good that you got your hp sauce for that price, especially since it was imported - however, for small dinky indie store in small dinky no where america, ( ... )

Oh, I didn't even check your link to see how much the HP Sauce there was, what I said wasn't a knock on your pricing, just noting how much it cost at the British specialty store I know of near me. :/

But yeah, I definitely didn't want the American version (like you mentioned earlier, American versions of imported stuff -- Cabury is such a good example -- suck).

just a big ole medium rare steak and a big puddle of HP :D

its somewhat similar to the american A-1, so if you use that in recipes, the HP can be interchanged. though HP is a bit more zippy i think ;)

Mmmm medium rare steak, my favorite preparation! I usually don't use A1 sauce after my steak's been cooked, but I've never tried brushing it on beforehand or something like that...

I don't usually use A1 in recipes, period, but I don't think A1 is as popular in the U.S. as HP Sauce is in Britain. I could be totally wrong about that, though.

Marinate porkchops with it for a day and then grill said porkchops.
