Microwave "cooking"?

Feb 23, 2010 00:33

So, I've only used microwaves for reheating leftovers and the occasional frozen meal (bleh) and I find them generally to be deplorable devices. But I may not have easy access to a kitchen this fall. I ask you, cooking, what sort of decent food can one possibly cook in a microwave? Thank you so very much in advance!

help: cooking method, method: microwave

I've never done it (I don' thave a microwave) but I've heard you can cook an egg in a mug (spray it with some cooking oil quick). It comes out looking like the egg in an egg Mcmuffin XD

We have that, plus the omlette maker. It does work well, though you don't get the yummy browned surface.

We just use a bowl. And non-stick spray helps so you don't have stuck egg.

$10 will buy you a single burner that plugs into the wall at somewhere like Walgreens. Those suckers are invaluable! Also a wok, crockpot, toaster oven and a griddle can all be had pretty cheaply if you look in the right places. I'm not sure if space will be a huge issue for you but these things can keep you from microwave hell this fall.

I second that. A crock pot, a toaster oven, and an electric griddle can replace most of the functions of a proper stove.

I mostly use my microwave for heating up food I cooked on my stove. But it is handy for melting butter and chocolate, or heating water and milk.

I make rice and steam veggies in the microwave all the time. It works great for winter squash (like butternut) or pumpkins. It also works well for things like broccoli and asparagus that just need to be quick cooked.

I know for a fact that you can make cakes in mugs in the microwaves! and they're pretty versatile too, you can add whatever you'd like to them. cocoa powder, orange juice/zest, spices, nuts, chocolate chips...

5-minute Microwave Mug Cake:
4 tablespoons flour
4 tablespoons sugar
1 egg
3 tablespoons milk
3 tablespoons oil
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

mix in the mug and microwave for 3 minutes. Cake will puff up and out the top of the mug. Don't worry, its supposed to do that! Just let it sit for a couple seconds and it will deflate a little back into the mug.

Throwing chocolate chips or heath chips in it is badass too!
