I find that using a fruit juice (peach, mango, orange) to make the bbq sauce makes it a lot lighter. Cut down on the amount of tomato paste (or ketchup and molasses, if that's what you're using) and use fruit juice and a splash of vinegar along with all your spices. Ginger really perks up this mix a lot too!
