Whenever I go into a casual seafood restaurant, a good barometer for the meal seems to be the coleslaw and tartar sauce. It sounds like a simple thing, but if the kitchen took time making both of those, then it is usually indicative of a good meal ahead. At Skipper's, I wasn't disappointed. Not only was attention paid to the slaw--finely shredded and not too sweet--but the tartar, often skimpy on the relish in other restaurants, was freshly made and studded with bits of pickle. Billed as a traditional New England fish fry, this casual diner exceeded all of my expectations. The young man behind the counter was prompt and courteous, eager to answer any questions we might have. The dining area, despite having several families eating, was kept flawlessly clean. Darryl order a combination platter with shrimp and oysters ($10.49) and I chose the flounder platter ($8.17). Within minutes, we were each sitting down to a monstrous mountain of food. Ladies, I would caution you, unless you are eating for sextuplets, the portion ($5.19) would probably be ample. On my plate alone, there were five pieces of fish! What can I say about the meal except that it was perfection. Fish battered in an ethereal light breading, stellar fingerling hush puppies and a generous spill of golden fries. I would've liked to have tried the lobster bisque ($3.20 ? cup) and homemade cobbler ($1.79) but I couldn't even finish my own food for fear that I might turn into
Violet Beauregarde and have to be rolled out.
