In an already crowded pond of self-serve premium yogurt shops, Smithfield's Sweet Frog is trying to emerge, sitting pretty on their respective lily pad. Darryl and I visited the Brightleaf location over the weekend and enjoyed two generous cups.

Like most of their near identical competitors, this Richmond-based franchise has a cheery, family-friendly interior. Not only that, but they pride themselves on community involvement. Loveable mascots Scoop and Cookie are branded on hats, t-shirts, plush and signage. The originators Korean influence can be seen not only in the artwork but also in several curious 'poppers'--edible flavored bubbles--appearing on the topping bar.
Inside is large with ample seating. Outside is lined with Adirondack chairs. FROG is an anagram for Fully Rely On God, so you'll notice that praise music plays--mostly Christian pop--from the overhead speakers. The goal is not to alienate those that may not be of another faith or persuasion, so the tunes aren't intrusive in any way. As far as the staff is concerned, they struck us as genuine, friendly and very helpful.
Eighteen? self-serve dispensers can be found in the back. Our favorite flavors include the rich, creamy New York Cheesecake, Blue Cotton Candy (taste just like a spun midway confection), Salted Caramel Corn and their seasonal Pumpkin Pie. If you care to gild the proverbial lilypad, there is a parade of diced fruit, cubed candy bars, assorted nuts, sprinkles and sauces to drench your frozen yogurt in. Some of the flavors seemed more difficult to distinguish than others.
One last thing before I go: the company does offer nonfat, lowfat, no sugar added and sorbet. What is available is at the owner's discretion so you may wish to call ahead if you have a restriction or a food-related allergy.
