The Stones' Night

An age has passed since the king of a hundred years sailed to these sunken shores, and walked through these stones now gathering algae and barnacles. There were four in all who went, three dark and one golden as the sun. They were young again, then, replenished by the isle, and enmity between them had been forgotten as if they were children playing at a game. Perhaps only the warlock remembered what had gone before, or the witch -- the king and queen were quite innocent.

Did they go back or forward? No one knows but it is said that they will come again and maybe they have already. They would not use the same names, of course -- those are too well known to be seen as anything but a joke in this world. Politics is not the same now as it was. But they must be great, whoever they are now. Greatness could never be held from them.

Or maybe they died as they lived, the warlock at his king's side, the queen with her witch. Whether on the battlefield drenched in blood and magic or safe and sleeping in their beds, it would always be so.
