Very very nice way of using volume! A pairing that I don't normally read, but I'm glad I clicked the cut. ^_^ I especially loved this line:

“He was always calm with you though, serene even. No matter where we were, how loud or obnoxious the hobbits were, when he got around you, touched you, or just looked over at you, it was like a calm fell around him. A peace descended in the midst of whatever maelstrom was raging. You gave him, tranquility, you taught him to hear the silence.”

Even though that line is borderline mushy/corny, it just sounds so natural the way you used it. Lovely!
