Chapter: 8/?
Synopsis: It was no secret that Takashima Kouyou was a weird kid, no, everyone knew that and most people found it comical. Of all the little kids in Mrs. Yamaguchi’s first grade class, Kouyou was the most peculiar and had the least friends mainly because no one wanted to be near the kid who was convinced he had magical fairies in his book bag. It wasn’t just his imagination either, oh no, they were real fairies and Kouyou knew it. He spoke of them all the time and as long as no one ever saw them, and told someone of their appearance, they would never disappear. All the other little kids thought he was just crazy, even his two best friends, but he knew he was telling the truth, and that was all that mattered to him.
‘Worst idea ever.‘ Kouyou thought to himself as he sat beside Yutaka on the balance beams watching his Yuu play basketball with Shin. Yuu and Shin hit it off quickly, and Kouyou was sure the little boy was working his way up to being Yuu’s best friend, which would completely knock Yutaka off his pedestal. Before long, Kouyou would be bumped down to square one: not having Yuu’s attention all to himself. The thought made him mad because it was obvious that they were destined to be together.
“Shin’s really good.” Yutaka said beside him and kept his eyes trained on the two boys in front of him. Kouyou pursed his lips and crossed his arms over his chest. At that rate, everyone would like Shin. He supposed it wouldn’t be a bad thing since he was a loner at his old school, but that didn’t mean he could take Kouyou’s school by storm and make them love him. Kouyou was supposed to be loved.
“Yeah, Shin’s so perfect.” He turned his head to the side in frustration. All his hard work down the drain in less then a few hours. Why couldn’t he be like his best friends and find someone who liked him back, someone who wanted to be together forever? Some people had all the luck.
“Yeah I know. Now that he’s opened up to someone, he seems pretty cool, don’tcha think?” Yutaka turned to him with a smile, but let it fall when he noticed how miserable Kouyou looked. “What’s wrong?” he questioned and patted the other boy on the head.
“It’s not fair.” Kouyou mumbled and looked down at the asphalt beneath his feet. His eyebrows knitted together as he pouted: the louder Yuu and Shin’s giggles got, the deeper his pout became.
“What’s not fair?” Yutaka moved so he was seated in front of Kouyou with his right hand patting the boy on the knee. When someone was upset, it was his job to make them happy again. That’s why the teachers loved him so much, but also because he always got his work done and helped around the classroom and playground. He wasn’t so much a brownnoser --as everyone so nicely put it-- he just liked to be helpful.
“Shin.” Kouyou looked over at the little boy as he bounced the basketball. “Yuu’s paying so much attention to him, but Yuu’s supposed to pay attention to me! Now that Shin is here, he doesn’t talk to me unless it’s to tell me something about Shin~. I don’t like Shin.” He leaned back with his arms crossed forgetting that he wasn’t on one of the benches placed around the playground, but on the balance beams. With a squeal, Kouyou fell backwards off the balance beam with a growl of frustration.
Yutaka jumped to his feet with a giggle and stood over the other little boy who had his feet dangling over the beam. “Are you okay, Kouyou?” he giggled harder when he received a glare. Sometimes Kouyou could be so brainless, but nevertheless cute. Kouyou helped himself up and moved toward the monkey bars where he could sit on the bars going up while his back was rested against the poles on the side, even if it was uncomfortable sitting on the bars the wrong way.
“I know he’s been paying attention to Shin,” Yutaka followed, “even I’m a bit jealous. Yuu’s my best friend, but now I have to sit and watch him run around with someone else without even asking if I want to play.” He sat on the mulch at Kouyou’s feet.
“You hate basketball. You said so in gym.” Kouyou muttered angrily. “and who said anything about being jealous? I’m not jealous!” Pfft, Takashima Kouyou didn’t get jealous, he got mad, and then he ran off and told Akira to beat whoever up. But now that Akira was happily married, he would probably no longer help out an old friend.
“I know I do, but I always play what he wants to. As long as Yuu is having fun I’m having fun.” Yutaka smiled showing off his dimple, “And you are too jealous! That’s why you don’t like Shin; you think he’s taking Yuu from you. But didn’t you just become friends with Yuu yesterday?”
“You wouldn’t understand.” Kouyou sighed as the bell rung. A whole half hour of recess and he didn’t even get to talk to Yuu once. Now they had to go back to class where he had to sit next to the boy who would probably do nothing but talk about Shin. Huffing to himself, he followed Yutaka back to the building wanting nothing more than the day to be over. He needed his fairies for help.
---
A blonde head met a hard desk eliciting a loud thud…. Continuously. Kouyou winced, but nevertheless, slammed his head on the desk again waiting for Yuu to shut his stupid mouth. He was cute, yes, but he just didn’t get the point.
“Kouyou, you’re going to hurt your brain.” Yuu put his hand on Kouyou’s desk as he sat up to slam his head down again. He could hear Kouyou grumble as his head met Yuu’s hand instead of the desk. “Unless there’s nothing in there to hurt. Is that what Akira would say? Do you miss Akira?”
“DO I MISS AKIRA?!” Kouyou shot up with a glare. “DO I MISS AKIRA?!” After an entire day of ignoring him, that was all he could say to him? Did he miss Akira? Kind of, but that was only because Akira never ignored him. Even though the other little boy sometimes said things to him that were mean, they both knew he never meant it. Like when Akira said they were no longer best friends because Kouyou wouldn’t let him see his fairies: they both knew no one else could ever be his best friend.
“Don’t yell at me~” The other boy shrunk away almost as if he were afraid to say anything else. Kouyou turned away and began working on his science homework without Yuu’s help. He didn’t need Yuu. Tomorrow he’d need Yuu, but not when he was so angry at him. He figured with a night of sleep and a little help from his magical fairies, he would be in a much better mood and then he could deal with Yuu.
‘Stupid friggin Yuu and his stupid friggin friend, always friggin making me mad today. Gosh, he just has to be so cute and irresistible.‘ Kouyou glared at his worksheet and clenched the pencil in his hand. The bell just couldn’t ring soon enough.
Yuu shrugged and went back to his own worksheet. Kouyou was probably just upset that his two best friends were gone. Whenever Yutaka was absent, he always got a little upset. It’s hard going through the day without someone who is close, so he completely understood.
He watched Kouyou work on his paper, and continued to watch even when he was taking it to Mrs. Yamaguchi. He seemed to stomp instead of skip like he usually did, his eyebrows were furrowed, his jaw clenched, and instead of sitting next to Yuu when he got back to the desk, he grabbed his things and went to his book bag without even saying a word.
Yuu knew what was wrong: he was just mad because he hated science.
Mrs. Yamaguchi told the kids to get ready to go home and began putting up chairs. Kouyou was already standing at the door with his book bag on his back and zipping up his jacket. He had to walk home again because his mom had to go to Midori’s parent-teacher conferences, and Amaterasu had volleyball practice after school. It’s not like he lived far away from the school or anything, so he was sure he’d be fine on his own, although he would rather walk with someone else. That wasn’t an option.
The bell rung just as Yuu was approaching the other little boy, but Kouyou walked out without even looking behind him. “Kouyou~” Yuu squealed running after the other little boy. He knew Kouyou had to walk home again and he didn’t want him to walk all by himself. The big kids could make fun of him, or even worse, they could beat him up. He just couldn’t let either thing happen because Kouyou was his friend and he looked out for his friends.
“I have to get home~” Kouyou turned around and walked backwards. Yuu rolled his eyes and grabbed Kouyou’s arm.
“I know your mommy isn’t home because she’s with your older sister, and I know your other sister isn’t at home either, and your daddy works.” Yuu dragged the boy out of the school ignoring his protests, “You’re coming home with me and then me and Tomo-nii will walk you home like we did yesterday! Since we don’t have any homework, we can play video games, or watch a movie, or play on my swing set, or even with my Transformers.”
“I wouldn’t be alone at home, Yuu. Shinji and Naoyuki are there and they always impersonate my parents. That’s how I didn’t get in trouble when Mrs. Yamaguchi sent me and Takanori to the office for fighting! I wished they’d pretend to be my parents to talk to the principal.” Kouyou replied, but he knew he was going to end up sitting at Yuu’s house regardless of what he said.
“I don’t care. You’re coming with me.” Yuu continued to tug the little boy down the sidewalk.
---
“Mommy!” Yuu yelled as he and Kouyou toed off their shoes. Unlike Kouyou’s mother, his mother was home while his father was at Tomo’s parent-teacher conferences. “Kouyou’s staying with us until his mommy gets home, so we’re going to go play.” He tugged Kouyou toward the living room where his mother sat folding laundry and watching a soap opera.
“Alright sweetie, but before you go running off you your room, I want the two of you to have a seat in the dining room so I can make a snack for you. You’ve been at school all day, and I’m sure you’re hungry since lunch was a few hours ago.” Mrs. Shiroyama rambled and ushered the boys to the table. Yuu pulled out a chair and helped Kouyou climb up before he took a seat beside him.
“Mommy makes the best snacks.” He smiled happily. Now that they weren’t at school, he could talk to Kouyou and see what was bothering him. He didn’t like knowing the other boy was upset about something, but he couldn’t openly ask in a voice loud enough for the rest of the class to hear; Yuu wasn’t the type of kid to care too much about others.
Silence engulfed them while they waited for their snacks, and Yuu couldn’t help but frown at the fact. Usually Kouyou was really talkative and giggly, but today he was quiet and stayed to himself.
“Here you go boys.” Mrs. Shiroyama entered the room with a smile, placing a tray of snacks on the table for the boys. “My, my, Kouyou doesn’t your hair just look pretty today? Does your mommy do your hair for you.” Kouyou shook his head and smiled.
“No, my older sister Amaterasu does my hair.” He smiled picking up a cookie. “She always does my hair because my other sister doesn’t like it when people bother her. She gets real mad.” he giggled and took a bite. Mrs. Shiroyama patted his head and complimented his sister’s beautician skills before she walked back to the living room to finish folding the laundry.
Yuu tapped his lip and hopped off his chair, “Do you want any milk, Kouyou? Cookies are always better with milk.” He looked over his shoulder while he made his way to the kitchen.
“Yes, please.” Kouyou smiled back and watched Yuu climb all over the countertops to get two glasses. He wondered why Yuu didn’t just ask his mom to get the glasses for him, and pour the milk since Yuu was having so much trouble doing that too. Yuu had his tongue out in concentration as he poured the white liquid and squealed in delight when he didn’t spill anything.
“Piece of cake.” He hopped off the countertop and put the milk away before grabbing both glasses and walking very slowly back to the table. “Here you go Kouyou!” He handed the glass to the other little boy and sat his own on the table while he climbed back up to his chair.
“Thank you Yuu~” Kouyou leaned over patting Yuu on the head with one his most adorable smiles. Ha. Shin wasn’t getting milk from Yuu, he was. It was known now: they were meant to be.

The two boys sat side by side in front of Yuu’s television clicking controller buttons fiercely. Neither one of them wanted to lose a round of Tekken, but then again both were insanely competitive when it came to video games. Yuu was competitive in general, but he was surprised by how determined the other little boy was to beat him. If he wanted to be nice, he’d let him win: if he wanted to be nice.
Yuu was Gun Jack, and Kouyou was Forest Law, and currently, Forest Law was kicking the crap out of Gun Jack. The dark-haired boy stuck his tongue out leaned forward, clicking the buttons so hard his thumbs were throbbing. He could not lose, but Kouyou was doing such a good job that he knew he was going to be the loser anyways. When it came to losing, he was a sore loser and always made up excuses for why he lost: there was something in his eye, his character tripped when his finger slipped; everyone knew he just didn’t like to lose.
Twenty seconds later exactly, Yuu was growling in frustration. He hated to lose, and it was only worse because Kouyou was doing a victory dance and squealing like a little girl. At least Kouyou wasn’t mad anymore, so that was a plus, but now he was mad because he lost.
“You… you cheated!” He accused, but Kouyou only patted him on the head and told him he was stupid because you can’t cheat in video games. It’s impossible. He scrunched up his nose and swatted the other boy’s hands away and stood up.
“You really are a sore loser!” Kouyou giggled, following Yuu to the bed where he decided to sit for awhile. Playing video games wore him out, and his thumbs were numb. Taking a break for awhile seemed like a good idea, so he grabbed his pillows and laid them side by side so Kouyou could lie down too. Even if he was evil for defeating him, it was only nice to let him rest too.
“Yeah, well, you’re…” He bit his lip while Kouyou stood with his hands on his hips waiting for him to finish his sentence. “….YOU HAVE AN ANNOYING SMILE!” He yelled and threw himself face-down on his pillow.
“Ah~ so you’re going to go back to my smile?” Kouyou laughed and climbed up to lie beside his friend, “You can’t do that because you already said you liked it. Besides, everyone has to lose at some point, y’know. Don’t be such a baby.” Yuu lifted his head long enough to glare at the other boy who was still smiling at him. He groaned and let himself fall back onto the pillow. Kouyou could be so annoying, but he liked him too much to actually yell at him.
Kouyou yawned softly and shifted so he was comfortable before he fell asleep. After all being angry all day, he was more tired than he thought. Little did he know Yuu was watching him sleep with a smirk. Kouyou was even cuter when he was asleep, and it didn’t help that he sucked his thumb. The room was silent save for the small sucking noises. Reaching down to the end of his bed, Yuu grabbed his favorite blanket and covered them both up.
