Ya know, before George Michael got caught in a bathroom with his dick hanging out, before he Careless Whispered, before they woke him up before he go-go'ed... he was a white rapper. Wham actually started out as a rap act (remember Wham Rap and Young Guns! Go For It!?)

While I don't think rap is exclusively a black thing, I will admit after seeing this video of the crazy delicious one too many times, I can't help to think that Vanilla Ice did it much better. hell, even those sad little girls in Northern State did it better.

When I was living in the inner city back in the 80s, rap was just a way to express your thoughts about the hopelessness of seeing crack sold on the corners, seeing people laying dead in the streets, and wondering why all these 13 year old girls were walking around pregnant. I'm happy (?) to see that rap has turned into a way for two dumbass dorks to talk about eating cupcakes.

um...no, I don't. thank you for teaching me something.

I mean, I like the video. I like it as a funny comedy bit. I like it more than I like northern state, who have pretentions beyond creating funny comedy bits. I just don't like that it's being recieved by some people as something significant in relation to hip hop, or as setting some kind of standard hip hop songs should aspire to, that others are not achieving. luckily there's still plenty of good hip hop, even some that talks about things more complex than cupcakes.

I guess I would say to this, consider the sources. I don't think the people that are saying that Lazy Sunday is any more than a piece of comedy even get what rap is. Perhaps that's what they want rap to be- something silly for buffoonery, because it doesn't sound like Bob Dylan or Coldplay (thus making it "non-music"). It's just like the end of the first wave of disco, around 1979, when people like Rod Stewart were topping the charts with Do You Think I'm Sexy, and Ethel Merman was making a disco record. Mainstream rap has been hijacked and people like seeing people they can relate to... Eminem, these SNL idiots, etc... I think the next group of rappers are going to be straight from the streets, going back to selling their stuff out of their trunks, because the music industry has strangled the artists to the point where "real ( ... )

flava flav makes me sad.

thing is, at least some of the skits fans are real hip hop fans, who are at least quite knowledgeable, whether or not they "get" it. eg:

i think your point still stands, but the popularity and even respect amongst people beyond complete ignoramuses, who just know top 40 rap or whatevs, is of note to me.

I only listened to the song once, and liked it a bit better than you, though it is by no means a knockout. And saying that Jay had something to do with his shooting is a *big* deal. We'll see how that pans out. I'll write more after I have time to digest the tune.

So the part two to the dis is "Swagger Jackin'", where Cam plays an old compilation of lines Jay "bit" along with the originals, and adds his own ad-libs. Link is here:

LOL at "you stealin' shit from Frankie Lymon" at the end. One writer said that he got a note from a friend saying that this song felt like "my best friend attacking my father". That's kind of how I feel. My current favorite dissing my personal GOAT. I can't wait to see what round two is going to be. I thought Cam was actually pretty nice, and I loved the claim that Un was stabbed over Charlie Baltimore. Still, most of the second verse was not really there and the hook was ridiculous. Cam called him ALF, though.

I mean, I think Cam kinda came hard in at least the first verse. No homo.

i've always (=a year or two) meant to read some leroy; had enough folks tell me i'd enjoy it to think that it's not just a "your gender reminds me of this writer..." thing. so if you do read sarah, would you let me know what you think?

btw adored your goth explanation

because people like me like big good and big evil, in our literature because that’s how we often experience the world, which is one of the reasons some of us accidentally end up goth.

and the old coming out post. it's making me reassess my identity in scary ways .
