After a time, Beyond actually grew worried; he'd said that it was dangerous, and perhaps he'd been proven right rather more quickly than he'd have preferred. So when he did hear stumbling around, he was relieved when the vague stumbling became a person, and then Lute.

Wordlessly, he held out a flashlight; a little absently as well, admittedly, as he was primarily focused on scanning the ... boy in front of him. First, Lute was petite: lucky that he wasn't forced into a combat position with that stature. Second, shining his own flashlight strategically, he could see that he seemed between thirteen and sixteen; definitely not any older, but given Lute's manner of speaking, Beyond was inclined to believe him closer to sixteen. Blue hair, and ... it seemed to be natural; a gold cross set firmly in the center of his forehead; those robes: he really looked like a character right out of an anime. Lute's apparent attitude toward things and his behavior and actions just drove the point home: here, indeed, was someone who could lay genuine ( ... )

He hadn't intended to shine the beam directly into his face, but he also hadn't expected Lute to be so much shorter than himself; and in fairness, now that he wasn't slouching as much as when he was with Naomi he was a little disoriented with heights to begin with. Though it was natural for him to apologize automatically, he refrained; manners, while important, should be used sparingly, just as every other resource should be.

"I have come across no serious obstacles. It is a flashlight, and I have one for you -- it will not be long for you to learn to use it, and you must keep one with you at night." It was a command, not a request, which he immediately attempted to soften upon realizing his tone. "It is unsafe to be without light."

Lute, he decided, was a tremendously open person, and though he was of course suspicious of this, he was very much inclined to draw the conclusion that Lute wasn't hiding anything terribly important under his exterior. He had strong opinions and morals, and as far as Beyond was concerned spilling those ( ... )
