X-Men First Class fic: Baby, It's Just a State of Mind (5a/?)

Aug 31, 2011 02:14

So, about this chapter. I got jossed by the dvd extras because of my planned build-up to Angel's strip club, and Erik had ALL OF THE FEELINGS regarding Charles' handling of same, so the whole chapter needed re-writing to make room for that. Hopefully I will have Dragneto all polished up in the next couple of days, but in the interim, here, have ( Read more... )

What a wonderful story this is! I just found it tonight and read all the chapters in one go and thoroughly enjoyed it! You're a fantastic writer! I love to a crazy degree your Charles - he's adorable and funny and quirky and sexy all at once (basically all the things that make me think of James McAvoy and his interpretation of Charles that you've captured spot-on here!) And Erik is a sexy force of nature! I really love how you've built up their relationship, taking it slowly, and theirs is such a charming relationship - sexy and funny and trusting and warm. In short, this is brilliant!

:D I am so glad you are enjoying, and specifically I am super-chuffed that you think this sounds like McEvoy's Charles! I am a big fan of voice, and have been working hard to try to get it right, so I am super-glad to hear you say so. :) Thanks so much for reading and commenting - it really makes my day!

Also, that icon is amaaaaaazing.

I love love love the Sixties culture that's so present in this fic, particularly the way you subtly build in race/gender/sexuality issues in ways that arise out of the characters' natural thought processes rather than (as some fics do) suddenly announcing them then ignoring them, or (worse) the sense of historical place being curiously absent (so many fics in this fandom feel way too 2011 for me; 1963 is such a melting pot of STUFF!).

So yeah. Loving this. (I'm the lurky anon from the last chapter, I just wanted to shout encouraging things again!)

Hooray! Thanks, lurky anon! Seriously, comments are such an encouragement to me as I struggle to bring this thing past the finish-line. Much appreciated!

I am super-glad the sixties stuff is seeping in. My master plan is realized! Mwahahaha. I've gotten a little ridiculous over it - seriously, you don't know how much time I spent looking for Las Vegas performance schedules for the early fall recruiting season so I could make sure that I wasn't picking the wrong act... It was ever-so-slightly ridiculous. :) The sixties have always been a favorite period of mine, so I've been really enjoying the chance to brush up and work some of issues du jour in!

Oh dear God, a casino. How do you manage to ferret out and explicate so delightfully these places and situations that are sure to drive both of these people totally around the bend and leave them so on edge? You do such a great job capturing both of their sort of ragged edges, and the way it explodes into sex--yum. Erik letting Charles see how he sees him, and the reaction that has on both of them, was so intense and hot, rowr. I do so love the way they're both turned on and made cautious by each others' power, it seems so natural for these two, and you can see a whole future unfolding (both the good and the terrible) in it. Fantastic.

Haha! The "road trip" sequence really freed up my ability to put these guys in situations I want to tease out! Thanks, filmmakers! Poor Erik; casinos, especially casinos owned by Shaw, are not places he wants to be. All those swirling coins. That is a big ol' ptsd mess, is what. It was sort of frustrating - Charles seems like he'd be a good character to use as an excuse to head-hop, but he's pretty strict about telepathy boundaries and kind of sucks at regular ol' standard issue empathy sometimes. Sigh.

Yeah - writing these two is kind of a saddening exercise because there's always the looming specter of "the terrible." I just watched X-Men: Evolution on Netflix streaming - it's a silly cartoon series from the early 2000s, but at the end *spoiler alert, just in case* Apocalypse gives Charles a vision of the future and Magneto throws in his villain towel and lives in the mansion with them forever and ever amen and it's so sweet. I WANT TO BELIEVE. Have your disagreements for a few decades, boys, but then sort it out!
