Thanks for posting this.

There are some Catholics who, if they couldn't go around calling people whores, wouldn't have anything to do with their time. There are a fair number of people in general for whom this is true, I'll grant, but there are also a fair number of Catholics who do this AS Catholics, as in, Calling People Whores Is What Catholicism Means To Me, and my mother's one of them, and...ugh.

'the fact that the content of these ads are completely consistent with their target and message (condoms as prophylactics for promiscuous individuals), contrasted by the adverts I've seen by, for example, Durex (condoms as contraceptives for faithful, monogamous couples).'

Condoms being advertised as prevention against disease rather than against pregnancy for the win. A piece of latex does not a contraceptive make.

(Hypocrisy for the lose. If you don't want women to get abortions, it's ultimately not in your interest to withhold information about sex/protection/contraception from them. Can't have it both ways.)

Can't have it both ways:

Actually, they really really want it both ways - according to the Catholic viewpoint the role of sex is to produce children, meaning that any family planning except abstinence - whether it's abortion or contraception - are flipsides of the same coin. Look up quiverfull at some point. A cynic might say that large catholic families means more catholics and more money to the church. A different flavour of cynic might say that it's a way of controlling and enslaving women. Take your pick.

As a side note, did you hear about the recent case in Brazil, where Doctors performed an abortion on a 9 year old rape victim - and bear in mind that there were high chances that the girl would die carrying a baby to term - and the church excommunicated everyone associated with her treatment? Proof if it were needed that the Catholic church is evil.

I did read about that actually, or if not, something very similar. (If you found out about it online, it's quite possible we followed the same links to get there.) And yes, it's appalling-- thank goodness someone had the sense to terminate it, though.
