I got a bit of flack last night at the munch for not using my real name on Facebook. Perhaps things will change if I get out of education. I don't want some vindictive student fucking up my chances of getting hired just because he or she got detention for some minor infraction.

There's a difference between using your real name and using a screen name. Since so many people use facebook as a completely vanilla thing, they're not going to associate with you with the name that you chose 'cause it outs them....

The point of your post was to not be able to be found by your students...

One option is a vanilla facebook then it doesn't matter if they find you...

Another option is not putting your last name and/or picture which makes it ridiculously hard to find you given your common first name. Then you can do whatever you want.

Finally, the option you picked, is to make a screen name your name on face book which thus negatively affects the people who are your friends who have chosen option 1.
