For the past nineteen years life had been too good to Harry Potter. Something was bound to go wrong. So when the boys returned for Christmas hols he was only slightly surprised by Albus' request.
"Can I invite my best friend and his parents for Christmas Eve dinner?"
"We're not having one," Harry replied, tapping his chin with the quill as he thought of what else needed to be added to the grocery list.
Albus was not deterred. "Well, can we have one? Please. Just three people over? Please?"
Harry sighed and looked down at his son, who was frowning up at him with those big eyes. He refused to let that look get to him -- so he told him to ask his mum.
"Muuum!" And he tore off through the house, leaving Harry to chuckle behind him. Ginny had always been better at resisting the children's pouting faces so he was without a doubt that she would reply negatively. She knew how much he disliked get-togethers with people he wasn't close to. He didn't like being asked to recount the war.
With a sinking feeling he heard Ginny cry, "Of course!" and Albus squeal the way he always did when Ginny pinched his cheeks.
It wasn't until a large black owl swooped through the window, shaking snow onto Lily, who had let it in, and dropped a letter into Albus' hands that Harry realized just how much karma was trying to make up for the past years.
The letter was sealed with a stamp of the Malfoy crest, which Harry remembered vividly from his stint in the Malfoy Manor so many years ago.
"I thought your best friend was some Janet girl," Harry said, spreading more butter onto his toast.
James snickered into his pumpkin juice. Albus glared at him before flushing and bowing his head to his plate. Instantly he started swirling his fork through his eggs.
"What's wrong, Al?" Ginny asked, concern evident. Albus only played with his food as a diversion.
"Janet is my best friend. That's a girl. My best boy friend is Scorpius." He shovelled a huge chunk into his mouth and grinned around it.
"Oh." Harry couldn't think of anything to say.
However, Ginny did. Thank Merlin. "Shush," she said to James, who, for whatever reason, was now howling into his drink. Speaking to Albus she said, "The Malfoy boy?"
Albus nodded rapidly.
"Well, isn't that nice?" She looked pointedly at Harry. "Some people can get over old grudges."
"Hey!" Harry started. "I don't hold a grudge. I saved him twice that night, you know. And I gave him back his wand and everything and we spoke civilly. I just don't care for him."
Lily piped up. "Didn't uncle Ron say not to befriend him?"
"Uncle Ron was kidding," Ginny replied instantly. "Al, we're glad you're friend's with Malfoy's kid. I just," -- she pointed to the unopened letter in his hand -- "uh, don't expect them to come for dinner."
Harry really knew the universe was out to do him as much harm as humanly possible when Albus shrieked and said they would be arriving Christmas Eve.
~~~
Christmas Eve dinner had gone well. Surprisingly. Malfoy's wife Charlene and Ginny got along so well that Harry was afraid Ginny would start inviting them over for tea. But at least they filled all the silences so that Harry wasn't forced to make small chat with Malfoy.
Plus it was worth it to see the smile on Albus' face. He hadn't stopped grinning since Scorpius had walked through the door. It was cute. Seeing the two boys together made Harry wonder if Malfoy and him could have ever been friends. Then he remembered Malfoy being a Death Eater and answered himself silently with a firm no.
"Ooh! We got one of those for," Ginny's voice dropped to a whisper as she leaned closer to Charlene, "James. It isn't wrapped yet. Want to see?"
"Of course." Charlene let the pot she had been hovering float back to the table. "Draco, why don't you help Harry clean up? After all, Ginny cooked so she shouldn't clean."
The two women giggled and dashed up the stairs.
Out of the corner of his eye, Harry looked at Malfoy.
"What house elves are for," Malfoy muttered.
Knowing Malfoy would probably gasp in shock, Harry said, "Ours is on vacation."
Malfoy stared at him, then shook his head. "I forgot how weird you are."
Harry laughed as he collected the plates off the table and took them to the sink.
"Daddy." A soft voice spoke from the doorway.
"Yes?"
"Daddy, when is Santa coming?"
Harry glanced at the clock hanging on the far wall. "Wow! Look, it's nine." He nodded seriously at Lily. "You better get to bed now. If Santa comes and you're not in bed he'll pass by."
Lily looked stricken, her eyes wide. She ran forward and threw her arms around Harry's waist, pressing a kiss against his shirt. "Night! I love you!"
Before Harry could bend over to peck her forehead, she was tearing off into the sitting room, screaming at the top of her lungs. "Go to bed, go to bed! If Santa doesn't come you're going to get it." Then she was thundering up the stairs.
"Charming little girl," Malfoy said dryly.
"She is," Harry replied shortly, turning on the faucet and clogging the sink.
"My son is much more behaved than that. Very mature."
Harry snorted. "Like you were?"
James popped up and cut into whatever Malfoy had been about to say. "I'm going to bed too. Much better than being with those two."
"What do you mean?" Malfoy asked, looking sour at being interrupted.
James rolled his eyes and stuck a tongue in his cheek. Looking at Harry he said, "They're like Teddy and Victoire, without the snogging." He stuck out his tongue, said good night, and exited the kitchen.
Malfoy turned to Harry and Harry saw the same confused look mirrored. They walked to the doorway at the same time. The boys were sitting on the couch watching the Muggle telly that had taken Hermione about a month to figure out how to work when there was so much magic surrounding it.
Scorpius was the one closest to them and his eyes were glued to the telly, oblivious to Albus' antics. Albus was alternatively staring down at their clasped hands and at Scorpius' face. He was grinning wider than Harry had ever seen. It rather looked like it hurt.
Malfoy leaned close, his hair brushing Harry's cheek. "Your kid's gone gay on mine."
Harry slowly turned his head, his eyes instantly crossing at how close Malfoy was, but he managed to raise his eyebrows. "My kid?" he whispered. "Scorpius' holding Al's hand just as much as Al is."
"Yeah, well, there's no gayness in my family."
"And there is in mine?!"
Malfoy cocked his head and leaned in the rest of the distance, pressing their lips together. Harry gasped and then there was a soft, wet tongue in his mouth, swirling around. Some form of a sound escaped Harry's throat, though he wasn't sure exactly what it was, or meant. Then Malfoy was pulling away, sucking on Harry's bottom lip for a second before releasing it and turning back to watch the children.
Harry just stared at him, trying to still his beating heart and clear his mind.
Malfoy patted him on the shoulder once as he moved further into the kitchen, turning off the sink facet. "I'd say he got it from his father."
Air finally came to Harry and he took a big gulp. He looked into the sitting room. Both boys were staring at him. Harry grinned way too brightly and whirled around, banging his head into the doorway.
Luckily, before Harry was able to say something stupid to Malfoy, their wives re-entered. The rest was a blur. The Malfoys donned their coats, Scorpius complained about leaving, Albus and Scorpius shared probably the longest hug in the history of hugs and Malfoy smirked at Harry during it, and then they were gone.
Ginny moved to Harry and kissed him on the cheek. "I invited them for New Years. Charlene's wonderful. I can't believe Malfoy married someone so nice."
Harry forced a laugh and then flopped onto the couch next to Albus. Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer was flashing across the screen. Albus tapped Harry on the arm and Harry peered down at him, belatedly remembering Albus had witnessed.
"You didn't clean up!" Ginny called from the kitchen, but Harry ignored her.
"James said boys aren't supposed to kiss each other."
Harry quickly looked back at the telly.
"He said it's wrong. But...but Scorpius keeps saying it's okay."
A grin grew on Harry's face. He swung his arm around Albus' shoulders. Wouldn't Malfoy just love to know his kid was trying to induce Harry's kid into kissing? "Just do what you want with that."
"Like you and --"
"No!" Harry cut in sharply. "That's different." He pulled Albus closer to make up for his tone.
"Oh. But --"
Harry slouched down so he was level with Albus and feigned complete interest in the movie. "Let's just watch Rudolf, hmm?"
Albus nodded, eyes wide as he stared at Harry, whose mind instantly travelled to New Years. The universe was really making up for the past nice years. Something spectacular had better happen after all this.
Sequel.
