ALEX & ME--book by Dr. Irene Pepperberg

I took sagitare to the airport on Saturday morning. There is a bookstore in the departures area so of course I walked by. One of the books on the display table up front was Alex & Me, the story of an African grey parrot and the scientist who studied his language acquisition and, by extension, his intelligence.

Poor little dude. I don't know, man, I'm behind his achievements and all, but there's something a little heebie-jeebie-ish about keeping an animal that smart in captivity.

It certainly makes me feel even worse for a lot of pet parrots who are more or less kept in solitary confinement all their lives.
