Gardening overload

It's October and cold and rainy - the leaves are gorgeous, but it's cold.  And rainy.  In a couple of days we'll be at home with a weekend off for the first time since Sept. 19.  I'm trying to figure out what I want to have happen in the yard next spring, so I'll know what I need to get done this weekend (i.e. before last frost and while the city ( Read more... )

I have had zero luck with blueberries. They tend to be rather fussy, and most of the larger varieties need a pollenator. On the other hand, my tart cherry tree self-pollenates, and on the rare occasions I can keep the birds out of it, produced a good set of fruit on its third year.

I've been feeling like I'm supposed to really want to grow blueberries, because I love eating them, and on the order of fruit-tree pruning, they're "easy". But I'm kind of scared of it, the soil prep and maintenance, the bird-netting, the pollination question... Thank you for making me feel less like I"d be seriously missing out by skipping the blueberry bush.

If you want tips, discussion, or ideas, I'm happy to chime in or even come up for a consult. :-)

Oh, and if you want raspberry or blackberry canes, I can cut some to transplant, though be advised that they'll definitely spread as much as you let 'em...
