You'd be surprised, there is a big market for Graphic Design and it can pay very well, however it is quite competitive. I've been freelancing in Graphic and Web design for a few years now, which can be hard if when jobs aren't to frequent however if you are with a company it can be better, especially if you have a large client list.
Always great to have informants!computersherpaNovember 1 2007, 07:20:11 UTC
Thanks for the info, Tweek! I'm attracted to the idea of letting someone else run the company, allowing me to focus on the artwork. If I did sign up with another outfit, though, it'd have to be small. I'm through with working for large companies for now--I want to choose who I work beside.
Food for thought. Any idea where I can pick up a guide to the field of Graphic Design?

Well I have a ton of sites I read most are catered to actual designing, trends, websites and freelancing.
However there are a lot of blogs out there run by designers that offer tips, advice and insight into how the industry works. Freelanceswitch.com is a pretty good site they have podcasts about conducting work, charging etc, (again more tailored to free-lancing) however if you scour the site and comments you will find contributors have links to their sites which may contain info.
It depends what kind of information you are specifically looking for.
