It's very well written! I just have a few little quibbles:
1. I believe 'AD' goes after 1500, not before it, when you're talking about years and such. 2. In-text citations need to go before punctuation; on some of yours they're outside the period when they need to be inside. The exception to this rule is if a quote contains any final punctuation other than a period, in which case the punctuation remains inside of the quotation mark and the citation outside with no following punctuation. (Cf. your paragraph on Bartok and the Hungarian gypsies.)
I love you for pointing out the political incorrectness of the term "gypsy." I hate to describe my ethnicity using that word, but most Americans have no idea what Romani is. You win times a billion.
Seriously, it's a big issue! I think it's so important to be able to call people the right thing. I mean, I wouldn't want to be called 'cracker' or something, you know?
