That's quite a difference. Why would they make the change? It seems odd.

The Lexicon has a section which lists the differences between the US and UK editions of each book. This link takes you to the page for book 1. If you click on the book covers at the top of the home page of the Lexicon it takes you to a page with links to all the resources for that book, including the table of differences.

One of the most interesting differences in the two versions is the usage of commas. In the UK version, the following sentence is written without a comma separating ‘and’ and ‘Hermione,' (Remus needed to talk to Harry, Ron and Hermione.) In the US version, there is a comma separating the two, (Remus needed to talk to Harry, Ron, and Hermione ( ... )

Wow. I wasn't expecting there to be so many differences. I wondered about the quotation marks and i think i'd like the use of double better. It'd be cool to read the US versions.

IIRC, there were several lines missing from Chapter 27 of HBP-UK. I've italicised the lines which appear only in the US edition.

Draco: He told me to do it or he’ll kill me. I’ve got no choice.
Dumbledore: He cannot kill you if you are already dead. Come over to the right side Draco, and we can hide you more completely than you can possibly imagine. What is more, I can send members of the Order to your mother tonight to hide her likewise. Nobody would be surprised that you had died in your attempt to kill me - forgive me, but Lord Voldemort probably expects it. Nor would the Death Eaters be surprised that we had captured and killed your mother - it is what they would do themselves, after all. Your father is safe at the moment in Azkaban... When the time comes we can protect him too. Come over to the right side, Draco... you are not a killer...

Very odd, and I can't remember if the publishers/Jo ever explained the discrepancy. Ultimately it seems to have meant nothing :\ so perhaps the later editions were identical.
