Blood had soaked into Tseng's collar, and there was a smudge of it on his chin, as well. Uncharacteristically, he hadn't noticed, and hadn't changed

Drifting in a haze of green, Zack let himself just float and wondered why he hadn't been dissolved into it yet. That's what was supposed to happen when you died, right? You got absorbed back into the Lifestream. The fact that he seemed to be just hanging here terrified him.
Because it meant his body was still alive somewhere. He was trapped in a mako haze, like Cloud had been, and his comatose body was still breathing. Most likely locked up in a lab again, recaptured by Hojo.
Zack wasn't really sure he wanted to wake up to that. Floating here in the painless, endless green might be preferable.
Unfortunately, he'd never been the sort who could just give up. If he was alive, that meant there was still a chance to win his freedom. But not if he stayed here, safe and untouched.
Besides, Cloud might still need him. Tseng might have been wrong.
The body on the hospital bed stirred faintly, an almost inaudible groan reaching Tseng's ears.
Tseng set his PHS aside and looked up at the groan.
"Zack," he murmured, getting to his feet. He didn't approach the bed. If Zack moved suddenly, a wild swing could break Tseng's neck. "Don't try to move. You're still healing."
That... was not the voice Zack had been most afraid of hearing. If he'd caught one hint of Hojo's presence, he'd have started struggling. Not that it would have done him much good, since Hojo would certainly have had him well restrained.
He also didn't seem to be in a mako tank, though judging by the sharp scent of antiseptic he was probably in some kind of lab. Still, Tseng's voice meant he at least had a potential ally.
With an effort he cracked one eye open, and turned his head in the direction of Tseng's voice. To his surprise he found himself in a rather nice room, a comfortable bed... and not restrained in any way. "Wha..." his voice came out as a croak, and he coughed, unable to continue.
Tseng cautiously moved closer. It didn't seem as if Zack were about to start struggling, and even if he did, he seemed even more weak than Tseng had expected.
"You're at Healin Lodge," he said quietly. "You were very badly injured, Zack, but the healers say you'll be all right in a few days."
Even more cautiously, he added, "What do you remember, Zack?"
