I get depressed a lot about these things sometimes, and worry. And I wonder, how can people be so willfully ignorant to everything that goes on?

I worry too. I think ignorance comes from lack of education or fear, and it's unfortunately one of those things that will get worse as schools deteriorate and populations increase. I saw a documentary recently - The Age of the Self - that you can watch for free over at archive.org and I highly recommend it. Although it was made in 2002, it is quite prescient and explains really well some of the major problems we have today.
