Just read A Handful of Dust by Evelyn Waugh. The first 2/3 is English country house stuff but the latter is a sort of pastiche of this kind of explorer - the characters go off in search of a mythical city.

It was published 9 years after Fawcett disappeared, so it must have been based on him!
