He's never seen Deryn out of uniform before, and he isn't sure what he was expecting, but -- well.

Her hair is still short, and she's still wearing split trousers (he has heard her vehemently insist to the lady boffin that she will never again be stuffed into a barking skirt) but these are tighter-fitting, hugging the curves she has instead of hanging slack to hide them. Her chest is unbound and there's an embroidered insignia over her left breast, same as Alek's, that he can't stop staring at.

"Barking spiders, Alek, close your mouth before it sticks that way," she mutters, ears flushing bright red.

He blinks. "Sorry."

"Keep your eyes on the dance floor, dummkopf." She pinches his arm through his dress shirt, hard. "We've got a loris to find."

Yep, Alek thinks. She may not look like a boy anymore, but she's still the same old Deryn.

I read pretty much anything (and until recently, worked at the public library). All the steampunk stuff on the cover of this one caught my eye, but I never got around to the sequel(s?) It didn't really seem to catch on, though...

No, it didn't . . . It's a shame, because they're really very good books. You should try the sequels.
