Yes, there was the betrayal. They don't trust many people; they've maybe never trusted someone like they trusted Cas. And they didn't just trust Cas with themselves - they trusted him with them. There had always been something between them more than brotherhood; they knew that. But they had known that once they crossed that line completely they could never cross back. They'd known that they couldn't possibly work without those things that Cas eventually brought to the table
