Matthias, I-Am That Is, watched the waters of the River Moss rush past, Martin’s sword a heavy, yet welcome, weight in his paws.

Yay, thank you for the Redwall fill! Wasn't sure anyone would pick it up, but I was just recommending the series to someone yesterday and it was on the top of my brain.

Also, OMG CUPCAKE ICON

Yay, I'm glad you liked it! I couldn't resist filling your prompt when I saw it, as it brought back memories of my childhood! XD That series is awesome.

and your own cupcake icon is making me hungry! XD

That series refined awesome- my fiancé and I have actually tossed around Martin, Luke and Matthias as 'less obvious' fan name hommages to our kids down the line lol. (Well, and Logan and Jacen, but those have nothing to do with Redwall specifically, just that we have semi-hidden nerd tendencies.)

And OMG the author was in a class by himself- he was in my town on a book tour/whatever back in 2003 and ODMFBSHSGAJDIDNSBHK!!!!

I have a weakness for food icons, but I pretty much I to throw them out at random because I can rarely find a 'proper' use for them lol

It sure did! I think that’d be cool to name your kids by any of those names! I’ll probably end up doing something similar by calling my kids Jim or Leonard or something Trek related knowing me, lol!

Wowza, how awesome’s that, that he was in your town? I would have loved to have seen him on a book tour or something but sadly I never did. I can imagine him being really awesome though!

lol, I am the same as you - I have a weakness for food icons, too (I love food and cooking) but I do the same. I always throw ‘em out in favour of other icons because I rarely use them! XD

...I'm actually surprised my fiancé hasn't suggest a Trek name. I suppose we've got Jacen (Star Wars) and Malcom (Firefly) and one can only have so many space cadet kids? LOL

His accents, his energy, it was just incredible! (He was promoting the non-Redwall Castaway of the Flying Dutchmen books at the time, which are also quite wonder.) Seriously, if you've never heard any of the books on tape/cd, I cannot rec you do so enough sometime- whole new level of magic! I was crushed when he died, favorite long term modern author, there aren't enough people like him in the world.

Food is fabulous! I adore food! Cooking is about one of the most enjoyable activites out there in my book, for sure! If the world came with unlimited icon space I would collect food icons like a mad thing. -_^

LOL, I suppose there is always the option of middle names! Then you don’t have to choose between Trek, Firefly and Star Wars inspired names. I know I would do something like that, lol!

Oh awesome, yeah, I’ve got Castaways of the Flying Dutchman - well, the first book in the series, anyway. I haven’t yet heard any of the audiobooks yet, although I do have two of the later Redwall books on CD. I really must listen to them when I get the time to - I bet they are brilliant. I was the same as you to be honest - I was really saddened when I’d heard he’d died. There definitely aren’t many people like him in the world. His books gave me so much pleasure growing up (and I still like them now!)

lol, I agree! I absolutely love food too. I really enjoy cooking too - I do it almost every day, lol! hehe, and I would totally be the same, if there was unlimited icon space, I’d tempt everyone with delicious images of food, lol. Make everyone hungry, haha!

(( You prompted Redwall OMG. ))

In his nightmares, the River Moss swells over its banks and comes to reclaim the Abbey pond, held hostage by mice. The abbey is swept away.

((I love Redwall, I just never think to prompt it for some reason. OMG found another series in common with you!))

Also I totes love this fill- so much horrible graphic heart-string tugging imagery! And think I apologies for writing angst to you earlier lol. ♥

Oh, psh, you should have seen the stuff I decided /not/ to write. I seem to be incapable of writing Redwall fluff, or maybe it's just Matthias. This requires experimentation!

The poor guy does kind of lend himself to that, doesn't he? What with the being an orphan, and the army of invading rats, and the mentor being murdered... Martin's got him beat on back story, though.

I'll have to add Redwall to the cycle of series that I usually prompt for... -_^ -_^

I suppose. On average, though, he seems quite happy! Between books, anyway. Oh yeah, Martin's definitely got the angstiest backstory, though Bella of Brockhall's not too far behind. For a place that's supposed to be peaceful and welcoming to all, there sure are a lot of depressing pasts.

As will I.

No, Matthias is definitely the anti-Tobias type most of the time lol. Oh the other paw, I have a hard time picturing you writing fic about him picking fresh blackberries to pair with warm scones on a sunny afternoon picnic with Cornflower my dear. -_^

Oh, Bella, noblest of badgers. How dare other authors corrupt your name in connection with sparkly vampires.

Word on the back stories- but they are so GOOD though.

Oh yeah. I did consider writing something fluffy for this prompt and then, um. This happened.

Oh, definitely. One thing I remember is that the TV show totally amped up Matthias' backstory -- there were all these flashbacks of his big, happy family and then Cluny attacked and killed everyone but him and his big sister and his sister carried him all the way to Redwall before she died and it was just like, c'mon guys, don't torture the poor mouse, he's been through enough already. But then somehow there was very little angst in anything else.

I was in high school when they started running the Redwall cartoons on PBS Kids and I still (secretly) planned my schedule around the installment's releases each summer.
