He can tell, sometimes, when Chuck is looking at him but seeing his brother. He doesn't think anyone else realizes how often that is, how frequently Chuck thinks of Bryce, if he ever really stops. They're so used to the friendly smile Chuck puts between himself and the world that they don't think to look behind it, at an often maudlin man, more aware of all that he's lost than his friends give him credit for.

Neal doesn't know if he sees it because he didn't know Chuck before the world had started to chisel at Chuck's hopeful facade. To separate it from Chuck's actual self, leaving it stood before him, as good a thing to hide behind as any, but bound to come crashing down someday, without any support.

Maybe Neal sees Chuck for himself because he's changed in the same way. He carries on as if the death of a twin can ever be finitely grieved for and gotten over, but more often than not, he's just going theough the motions.

He's coping, not much more. Maybe that's why he's with Chuck. Dating a man who dated (who loved) his brother, ( ... )

Thank you for this. There was a real undercurrent of angst here which worked well. I like the acknowledged loss for them both but the sense that they're helping one another grieve for Bryce.
