In the end, there were some things Castiel couldn’t fix. The angelic civil war caused horrific losses on both sides, and of course humans who were caught in the crossfire were considered “acceptable losses”. But it wasn’t acceptable; it never would be, and not just because it was Dean who paid the price. The doctors did their tests and measurements to explain the damage that had been done, but Sam could never explain to them that the injury had been caused by the presumption of one of the heavenly host hijacking Michael’s vessel as his own. Sam refused to let Dean die, but repair was beyond Castiel’s ability
