It’s as if the darkness is all he’s ever known. He’s no longer even sure if his eyes are open or not, it makes no difference to the unrelenting blackness surrounding him. It feels like he’s been here forever and, just as he’s sure he’s about to lose his mind, he finds himself thrown roughly down, still blind, but this time from the painful light. All he can do is scrabble weakly at the wood he’s lying on, head pounding until he remembers to breathe, and the sudden rush of cold air into his lungs makes his chest ache. When he coughs, he can taste blood.
Slowly, painfully, he eventually manages to sit up to find Will standing over him. “Mr Turner,” he rasps, as the taste of blood gets stronger. “You saved my life.”
The new ferryman offers his hand to help him up, “You don’t remember, do you?”
