Trying to explain differences in English and American culture to a friend of mine (stateside) last night and she came out with an absolute blinder:

"I don't get you guys at all. Here is the supposed land of culture and upper class behavior and you introduce your friends to other people as "that's Dave, he's a right twat". Your FRIENDS! What on earth ( Read more... )

I don't think it's too different. Maybe a regional thing? When I was introduced to Steve's friends, the guy said, "Yeah, we're assholes, but we're nice assholes."

Maybe it's that old Starfleet habit of hiding annoyance behind the most punctilious of good manners (kinda like dealing w/ Klingons, eh?) ;)

I know plenty of people in America who talk about their friends in a similar manner - it's all a matter of the circles you run in.
