I recently bought a pair of Paper Denim jeans that were $96 retail. (They recently lowered their price point from $150ish to $100ish) At the high end of what you want to pay, but they would definitely have straight leg, long legs, small sizes (30), and dark colors. And unobtrusive details. Not sure what the rise situation is for dudes. Also, I have dude friends who are very into APC jeans, but they are more expensive. ($150)

Good suggestion. I will see what my local suburban outfitters has to offer in the paper dept.

Slim, maybe. But fit? I hardly get out of bed this time of year, truth be told. Anyway, you can see the fucking favors it's doing me now - no jeans!

Really? I didn't know they had good jeans. My luck has been slim with their casual clothes, but their dress shirts are great for my occupational needs.

My brother wears a 20 or 30 waist and his favourite fit ever is called the Skinner by Levi. They don't make this anymore, although he says you can sometimes find them on ebay. You might be competing with him though! They really fit him well, he's muscular through the legs and very narrow in the hips. If you're like that, they might be a good fit for you. They have a tiny bit of stretch to them, you didn't mention if you wanted any stretch to the jeans, but usually it helps the fit as long as it isn't so much that it compromises the stiffness of the denim ( ... )

I meant 29 or 30. He's not, like, a child.

Don't be embarassed - I've been thinking about this for days on end. It's preoccupying my thoughts.

I will follow your suggestions. i looked on ebay and saw Skinners in my size, but they were described as having a slight boot cut, which gave me pause. I guess the boot cut is the easiest thing for tailors to solve, though.

And I have discovered, to my chagrin, that Levi's doesn't appear to even MAKE 30/34 in anything other than 501, which just doesn't cut it for me.

You make your own jeans?!?!?! I am totally impressed.

Not that I doubted your prowess more generally, but damn. That's some serious sewing.
