MARVEL HOTLINE: ALLAN HEINBERG
[This week hang out with TV and comic scribe Allan Heinberg as he discusses AVENGERS: THE CHILDREN'S CRUSADE #1!]
Hi, this is Allan Heinberg and you're listening to Marvel Hotline.
We're talking about Avengers: the Children's Crusade #1.
This story fix up in current Marvel continuity after the events of Siege and it takes into account all the adventures that the Young Avengers have had since the end of the Young Avengers' book that Jim Cheung and I did several years ago but it also reads very much as a direct pick-up from that book so we've tried to make very easy for long-time fans or to people who haven't read it.
Avengers: Children's Crusade is very much Wiccan's story. He's definitely the point of view character for this particular adventure. All the characters come into focus and their relationships come into focus one time or another but the story is definitely told from Wiccan's point of view.
The cast for Avengers: the Children's Crusade is actually huge. We're dealing with all the Young Avengers and we're dealing with present-day Avengers, and former Avengers, but also dealing with a large chunk of the mutant superhero community. We've got a lot of X-men, big gods, a number of what they're traditionally called super-villains. It's just an enormous, enormous cast and its story kind of span the entire Marvel Universe.
Having Jim Cheung back on the book is absolutely essential for me. There would be no Young Avengers if it weren't for Jim Cheung. I want to spend the rest of my life collaborating with him. Though to be able to work with him on a project that's gonna have be this characters, this book that we created together, a continuation of that sort of larger story it's really a dream come true.
The thing that Jim brings to the book that is remarkable to me is that somehow he manages to do, you know, big, sweeping action sequences that are incredibly dynamic. But he manages to make them extremely emotionally connected and resilient at the same time. The action is never eclipsing how the characters feel about what's going on in their world or about what they're doing. And Jim makes it all incredibly, incredibly easy.
Thanks for listening, this is Allan Heinberg and this is Marvel: Your Universe.
