Rose couldn’t let it go. An hour with the heavy bag didn’t ease her irritation. She hated feeling like Bruce didn’t trust her, like she wasn’t good enough. That was a poor excuse for slipping into costume and trying to hack his computer, but she had always found it easier to clear moral hurdles dressed as someone else

Rose exhaled slowly, feeling her shoulders drop. She was still keyed up despite the earlier workout; maybe a good sparring match would let her sleep tonight. Without another word she undid the clasp on her utility belt and set it aside. It was easier to practice ground-and-pound without the weight and they wouldn’t be throwing gadgets at each other on the mats. Cass did the same with her belt, but simply let it fall to the floor

The kiss was messy. It was broken, a stumbling of lips and teeth Rose hadn’t expected. Cass’ entire body was tense beneath her, like she was waiting for a killing blow to fall. Rose pulled back, propping her arms on either side of Cass’ head. Had she miscalculated? Bruce was going to make her scrub the rims of the Batmobile for a year after he gave her yet another lecture on invading personal space
